What is Cardiac Camp at UCLA?

Cardiac Camp at UCLA is a free, 3-day immersive medical program designed for high school students from limited-income and underserved backgrounds across Los Angeles. It will be run by David Geffen School of Medicine medical student volunteers.

Modeled after the pioneering Cardiac Camp at UCSF, our program brings this successful initiative to Los Angeles to serve local high school students.

The camp will provide early exposure to medicine and cardiology through hands-on activities (like ultrasound and EKG workshops), direct mentorship, and case-based learning that incorporates principles of preventative care and social determinants of health. We aim to educate students about cardiovascular conditions and preventative care, ideally creating a trickle-down effect as they bring this improved health literacy back to their families and communities. Additionally, we hope to inspire diverse, local students to pursue healthcare careers.

This initiative seeks to create a sustainable pipeline for underrepresented students by providing long-term college counseling post-camp to improve college success, ultimately fostering a future medical workforce that is more representative of the patient population it serves.
